This simple finger-prick blood test can provide you with detailed information about your iron levels to help identify iron deficiency anaemia or iron overload.
Anaemia due to iron depletion is widely held in children and women of all ages but mainly in women who still have their periods (at least 20% suffer from iron deficiency).
Do you need an Iron test?
The main symptoms of Iron deficiency are:
- Pale skin
- feeling tired,
- headaches,
- Elevated heart rate
- Getting out of breath easily
Iron deficiency occurs when blood does not contain enough red blood cells and thus low levels of haemoglobin, which is the major protein involved in carrying oxygen to your body’s organs and tissues and transporting carbon dioxide from your organs and tissues back to your lungs.
An important component of haemoglobin is iron. Depletion of iron, which can happen during pregnancy or growth spurts can also occur due to insufficient iron intake, inadequate absorption or from blood loss (periods, abnormal bleedings, ulcers, etc.)
Iron deficiency can have tremendous effects on health. Low ferritin may also indicate hypothyroidism, vitamin C deficiency or coeliac disease. Low ferritin levels are seen in some patients with restless legs syndrome, not necessarily related to anaemia, but perhaps due to low iron stores short of anaemia.
Aftercare
If you have a positive test, it is highly likely that you are iron deficient. It is now important that you seek medical advice for further blood tests to establish how low the deficiency is and check for the root cause.
Iron deficiency is very common with no serious root cause and can be easily treated.
However, it is important to speak with a physician to ensure you can access the correct treatment based on how low your level is and to identify possible causes.
If you have tested negative it is highly likely that your iron level is sufficient. If you continue to experience symptoms please contact your GP for further advice to determine the possible cause of symptoms.
